Why do I bring this up? Well, it comes from trying to explain what being a fan means – to me. I realise this is personal, and I don’t want to suggest there’s a “right” way to be a fan, but supporting Sunderland was never a choice. It just was. I’ve spent a lot of time in Argentina and people, naturally, have asked if I have an Argentinian team. My then-girlfriend and her family are Boca Juniors fans, and so I tried to support them, but the truth was that I didn’t care. I didn’t feel sick with nerves when they took the lead, and I certainly didn’t feel tears pricking at my eyes when I recalled their greatest triumphs.

I don’t really like being so emotional about Sunderland, but I am. And of course it has nothing to do with whichever bunch of players happens to be wearing the candystripes this season. Nothing to do with the manager, the style of play or success. It’s to do with home, and family, and a sense of the club as representative of a strand of belonging stretching back generations. My dad’s last game was the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day 2007, but in a sense he has been with me at every game I’ve been at since. What I hadn’t realised till last year is that his father, who died before I was born, had been coming with us for years as well.

There are more spaces in football than people think. Even if you play against a low block team, you immediately get half of the pitch.

And after that, in attacking midfield, you can provoke the opponent with the ball, provoke him to move forward or sideways and open up a space. But many players can’t understand the game.

They can’t think about or read the game. Things have become too easy for football players: high salaries, a good life, with a maximum of five hours work a day and so they can’t concentrate, can’t think about the game.

Barcelona’s players are completely the opposite. Their players are permanently thinking about the game, about their movement, about how to provoke their opponent with the position of the ball.

Despre politicieni, un paragraf care loveşte too close to home:

And the first thing they’ve done is to rob people the sense of belonging. Everything is theirs, including football. When the governor makes a street, it looks like he was the one who paid it from his own pocket. We were robbed the music, the parks, the squares and even football. And now they get surprised about people getting tired who end up camping in the squares.

Despre pierderea unei anumite culturi a fotbalului:

When I say that the Argentinian football suffered disculturization, I don’t talk about people reading Borges before. The culture of football was that, when I passed a bad ball, the other 10 players looked at you. I remember that, once, I was going to kick a side foul, all the team was up in the rival’s box, and I had to hang the ball. In the wall, there was just one player and I hit him. During one month, they were with the damn jokes: “If there’s a free kick, let Menotti kick it”.

There was something that made him different: He came here with a clear idea, he didn’t came to me like others, looking for inspiration, waiting for me to tell them the way to go as if I were a Messiah… He came with his idea and left with his idea. I was tired of talking with young coaches who come looking for the truth. Pep did not come looking for an answer. He already knew it.

Moldo-Valahia
